Principal and Research Director Ryan Welch was recently interviewed for AIA Philadelphia's Context Magazine. The Winter 2025 issue showcased architectural research and was co-edited by Franca Trubiano and Milton Lau.

In the interview, Ryan spoke about his career trajectory and the role of research in architectural practice today.

Since joining KieranTimberlake in 2011, Ryan described a cultural shift in awareness regarding carbon and life cycle assessment, including the KT-developed tool Tally®, and where to go from here.

"An extension of our life cycle assessment work is understanding the impacts of supply chains, not just in terms of their global environmental impacts, but how they intersect locally or regionally with environmental justice issues and labor exploitation," he said in the interview.

"We're trying to understand how we can best minimize risk throughout supply chains, from building construction all the way back to raw material extraction and processing. This is a generational challenge, probably a 30-year problem to tackle, but we need to start committing resources to it as an industry."

Ryan was appointed Research Director in 2024. He is currently a Co-Principal Investigator on an ARPA-E-funded research project into 3D-printed carbon-negative structures in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania.
