Mütter Museum Announces Expansion Plans
The College of Physicians of Philadelphia's $25 million renovation and expansion campaign was recently highlighted in The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Best known as the home of the infamous Mütter Museum and its troves of medical oddities, the College is the oldest medical society in the United States. The centerpiece of its campaign, the largest in its history, are renovations and restoration work that will improve visitor experience and expand and reorganize the College's available space.
KieranTimberlake led the master planning process for this project, which focuses on giving the College the facilities it needs to fulfill its new strategic plan and vision. The first phase of the master plan adds much needed space to the incredibly popular Mütter Museum, which can currently only display a small portion of an impressive collection that includes the Soap Lady—research at your own risk—and Albert Einstein's brain. By de-accessioning and digitizing medical journals and other materials housed in a library stack, our design more than doubles the size of the current Museum with a two-story expansion that connects the Museum to the popular garden and a reading room that will permanently display the College's rare book collection.
